Elective Classes – Choose one of the following to attend; Locking In: How groups Actually Play Together | Cindy Browne Rosefield This class focuses on ensemble awareness—how musicians listen, respond, and support one another beyond simply playing their parts. We’ll explore who really leads time, clarify the bass–drums relationship, and treat comping as a musical conversation. With an emphasis on dynamics, space, and interaction, this all-levels session will help you play with the band, not just in it. (All Levels) The Wonderful World Of Arpeggios | Mimi Fox Arpeggios are one of the most powerful tools in jazz improvisation when you know how to use them musically. This class explores practical ways to turn arpeggios into flowing lines, from outlining harmony to tasteful superimposition. Open to all instruments, you’ll leave with clear strategies for making your solos sound more connected, confident, and intentional. (All Levels) Harmony in Action: Learning Jazz Language Through Transcription | Peter Estabrook Discover how great jazz lines grow directly out of harmony. This class connects practical transcription strategies to chord tones, tensions, and voice leading in a clear, playable way. Whether you’re just starting to transcribe or ready to dig deeper, you’ll leave with tools you can use immediately. (Int/Adv) |

Elective Classes – Choose one of the following to attend; Inside the Groove: Understanding the Drummer’s Role in the Ensemble | Malachi Whitson This class helps non-drummers better understand what the drummer is listening for—and how the rhythm section really locks in. We’ll explore time feel, form, dynamics, and how drummers shape the energy of an ensemble. You’ll leave with practical insights that improve your time, phrasing, and communication on the bandstand. (All Levels) Enclosures: The Secret Sauce of Jazz Language | Jeff Antoniuk Enclosures are one of the most important melodic devices in jazz and a hallmark of the masters’ sound. In this class, we’ll break down this simple but powerful idea and apply it directly to tunes from our Summit set list. Designed for intermediate and advanced players, this session will help your lines sound more intentional, connected, and authentic. (Int/Adv) Composing Cool Contrafacts | Dan Marschak A contrafact is a brand-new melody written over the chord changes of a familiar jazz standard—think of it as giving an old tune a fresh outfit. This class slows things down so you can really dig into the harmony and discover what truly sounds good over the changes. Bonus: you’ll walk away with an original tune, and the ideas you create will naturally show up in your improvised solos too. (Int/Adv) |
