Jazz Music Theory 101  | Aretha Tillotson

“Music Theory” can sound boring alternatively alienating or boring. Busywork or rocket science. It turns out that understanding the theory behind the jazz that we play is both accessible and fascinating. Join Aretha Tillotson for a quick run through getting going with practical jazz theory. (Novice/Intermediate)

Drum Rhythms for Dummies | Jamie Cooper

Rhythms aren’t just for drummers! Sure we spend a lot of time on notes and pitches, but at least half of what a horn player, guitarist or pianoist plays are . . . rhythms. Join Jamie Cooper for a tour of some classic rhythms from a drummers perspective. We’ll be able to use this information immediately, so get ready to sound better, faster! (All Levels)

The Art of the Phrase | Jim Head

How we construct our musical phrases is arguably as important as the notes we play. This masterclass will examine how jazz improvisers use phrases effectively to make clear musical statements, to organize ideas & motifs coherently, and to create balance, colour, variety, and tension in improvisation. (Intermediate/Advanced)

4:00 – 5:30pm Combo/Improv Group – Revisit the morning group and repertoire, armed with the new material from the afternoon classes

Make Your Practice More Effective | Joel Gray

Sometimes it’s hard to just get into the same room as our instruments. After that hurdle, it is plenty hard to know WHAT to practice, and HOW to practice. We have all spun the wheels over the years, and hoped and imagined that their must be a better way. Join us and take home some powerful ideas. (All Levels)

Mental Games of Music | Chris Andrew

Whether you are a pro or a total novice, every musician on earth (yes, EVERY musician) deals with frustrations, unmet expectations, and a lack of development. How should we deal with these inevitable moments, and what is a path through it all to keep finding the joy in music making? (All Levels)

Enclosures | Jeff Antoniuk

Perhaps the most important melodic device we can talk about in jazz, “enclosures” should be on the to-do list of every jazz student who is getting more advanced and more serious about sounding like their heros. In this class we’ll discuss this simple device and apply it immediately to songs in our set list (Intermediate/Advanced)
