7:00 – 10:00pm | OPENING CONCERT (3D Trio & Guests) – Join the 3D Trio (Jackie, Amy and Sherrie) and special guests for our 21st annual Opening Concert for the JazzWire Summer Summit. 10:15 – 12:00pm | Combo/Improv Group – Meet your band & faculty leader for the day. This is the core of the camp! Your faculty leader will give you improvisation ideas, play with you, and let you try things out in real time, working from the Summit songs! |

3:00 – 3:50pm | Elective Classes (Choose ONE of three classes to attend): –Bebop Boot Camp: Developing Linear Language (Int/Adv.) Dr. Shawn Purcell takes us through the use of bebop scales, bebop outlines, arpeggios and chromatic improvisational devices to get our solos sounding more legitimately inside the bebop idiom. (Dr. Shawn Purcell) –What to Listen For in Miles Davis Prestige Recordings (all levels) In this class James Moore gets us listening deeper than you can imagine, using the classic Miles Davis Prestige albums. Some of the most important and influential jazz recorded in the 1950’s, you’ll leave with bigger ears, and a bigger brain! (James Moore) –Interaction Leads to Deeper Satisfaction! (all levels) This class, built for both rhythm section players AND horn soloists is all about how to get interacting musically with each other, “talking to each other” on the bandstand. One of the most important aspects of jazz, and also one of the least taught. (Dr. Sherrie Maricle, Jeff Antoniuk, Jackie Warren, Amy Shook) |

5:45 – 7:00pm | OPEN JAM SESSION – Join us for TWO jam sessions at our workshop location, starting just after classes end for the day. We’ll have a novice/intermediate jam in the “Music Room”, and an advanced jam in “Fellowship Hall”. Feel free to bounce around between the two! |

The use of themes creates an instant connection with your band mates, the audience and yourself. Join Brent Birckhead as he shows us how to find these higher musical experiences. (Brent Birckhead) –How To Play Longer Lines (Int/Adv) Great jazz is undeniably about those long lines of 8th notes we hear from our heroes. But how in the world are we expected to find all those correct notes in a row? And at those faster tempos too? Well, what if there was a template, and a couple hip tricks to get us there? Let’s dig in! (Jeff Antoniuk) –Clave, Tumbao, and Montuno (all levels) Led by Cuban music master Jackie Warren, the 3D Trio digs into the Afro Cuban music tradition by investigating the rolls of the montuno (piano), Tumbao (bass) and clave, central to all instruments. 1:30 – 2:30pm | Whole Camp Masterclass – David Jernigan, DC bassist and Jazz Band Masterclass faculty member will be hosting a session for everyone on Alexander Technique and its effectiveness for musicians. David is a certified Alexander teacher, and this session will include plenty of tangible takes aways, plus some hands-on work for a few lucky volunteers. |

3:00 – 3:50pm | Elective Classes (Choose ONE of three classes to attend): –The Art & Mechanics of Section Playing (all levels) With over 40 years experience in working with various horn sections, Gerg Boyer helps us break the code on what makes a horn section great, including the art of writing those arrangements for horns. Let’s pick apart the details & nuances of better section playing. (Greg Boyer and Jeff Antoniuk) –Rhythmic Development: How To Develop Our Musical Phrases (all levels) So much time gets spent talking about melodic and harmonic techniques, but there is as much or more on the rhythmic side of the equation to dig in to. Here, rhythmic master Frank Russo shows ALL INSTRUMENTS how to begin playing and developing with rhythm. (Frank Russo) –Complete Your Masterpiece: Paint by Numbers Endings: How To End Tunes (Int/Adv) The last thing we hear in a great performance is the ending, and if the ending is a mess, it’s probably not a great performance!
