Metronome Games | Chris Bates

Time and groove are everything in jazz, but how we develop those skills is far from obvious. The metronome helps, but how do we use it in an effective manner? Let’s take a tour through some fun and effective games we can play to develop our sense of times and groove. (All Levels)

Enclosures & Better Melodies | Jeff Antoniuk

Perhaps the most important melodic device we can talk about in jazz, “enclosures” should be on the to-do list of every jazz student who is getting more advanced and more serious about sounding like their heroes. In this class we’ll discuss this simple device and apply it immediately to songs in our set list (Intermediate/Advanced)

How To Solo When You Aren’t A Jazz Soloist | Elaine Burt

Using jazz standards and simple etudes, Elaine Burt shares a great approach to improving our jazz improvisation skills, no matter our current ability level. This class will give you the opportunity to see what it feels like to play a well crafted and cohesive solo, and show you a great path forward in your goals to become a more confident soloist. (Novice/Intermediate)

4:00 – 5:30pm Combo/Improv Group – Revisit the morning group and repertoire, armed with the new material from the afternoon classes

Pentatonics in Jazz | Zacc Harris

Coming up with great melodic material is the goal of every jazz musician, but there are so many ways to do so. Pentatonic scales are a great starting point, but they can become a deep and nearly endless topic as well. Let’s get started with some classic uses of the pentatonic scale! (All Levels)

Interpreting Chord Changes | Adi Yeshaya

Understanding chords and chord functions is one of the sometimes-scary and eventually very fun parts of improvising jazz. In this class, we’ll earn to use chords to create tensions and better shape our phrases, all leading to deeper and better solos. (Intermediate/Advanced)

4:00 – 5:30pm Combo/Improv Group – Revisit the morning group and repertoire, armed with the new material from the afternoon classes
