Our Schedule – Winter Summit

Each day, we’ll have an immense amount of information shared, get you playing, improving on your instrument, and get you inspired like never before. We have years of experience balancing the schedule with breaks and learning!

Friday – January 31st

10:00 – 10:15amWelcome Meeting – Jeff will introduce the staff & faculty, our Summit plans this year, and provide all of the information you’ll need to get around!
10:15 – 12:00pmCombo/Improv Group – Meet your band & faculty leader for the day. This is the core of the camp! Your faculty leader will give you improvisation ideas, play with you, and let you try things out in real time, working from the Summit songs!
12:00 – 12:45pmInstrument Specific Masterclass – A class specific to your instrument – and a place to dig deeper into the mechanics and specifics of it.
12:45 – 1:30pmLunch! – Rest your eyes, fill your stomach. We have a lot more playing to do!
1:30 – 2:30pmFancy Class of the Day! — Hidden Pictures (Chase Sanborn) –  As kids we tried to find ‘hidden pictures’ within a larger picture. As jazz musicians we look for ‘hidden solos’ within the aural picture as laid out by the accompanists. It helps if you know what to look for.
Adult jazz students can easily get consumed with theoretical information and end up overthinking things. Here, we take an ’Ears First’ approach to learn that it is actually easier to understand a sound than to learn the theory that explains the sound.
2:30 – 2:45pmComputer BREAK! – Take a short walk, rest your eyes!
2:45 – 3:45pmPrivate Lessons & Private Practice – Everyone gets a 15 minute Private Lesson with a faculty member. Sign-ups will be published on JazzWire. Chat in the open classroom or practice privately during the down time
3:45 – 5:00pmCombo/Improv Group – Revisit the morning group and repertoire, armed with the new material from the afternoon classes
6:00 – 7:00pmVIRTUAL HAPPY HOUR – Join us for a daily wrap up happy hour. Talk with our faculty and other JazzWire members on Jazz to Hockey, and everything in between.

1:30 – 2:30pmFancy Class of the Day! — Actual Music with Digital Patterns (Jeff Antoniuk) – Digital Pattens, typically small and short groupings of notes like 1-2-3-5 can be powerful tools when combined with interesting root motions. Great for our fingers, easy to grasp for our brains, and typically quite useable on the bandstand, digital patterns should have a good place in most modern jazz musicians’ toolbox.

1:30 – 2:30pmFancy Class of the Day! — Solo Rubato Playing (Steve Herberman) –  Think of “Sonny Rollins playing a solo saxophone concert,” and how he (and we) didn’t miss ANY of the other instruments that would typically be handling the rhythm and and harmony. What is going on there, and how do we do it better ourselves?
In this class, Steve will use our repertoire to demonstrate and discuss approaches to playing single note lines to hint at the harmony via scalar and arpeggiated fills.
